Ultimate Self-care Energy Meter

Updated: Jan 3, 2019

Take a deep breath in through your nose, out through your mouth. Focus on your jaw, physically relax the muscles. Become aware of your tongue and drop it to the bottom of your mouth. Are your shoulders touching your ears? Release the tension, drop your shoulders into their natural position. One more time in through your nose, out through your mouth.

Jot down Thank you followed by your name on the top of the blank page in your journal.

Congratulations! You just completed a guided journaling prompt by giving thanks to your body and activating positive energy while releasing tension.

Our energy is directly related to our passion. How can we practically keep our inner energy high in order to to pursue our purpose with passion?

On the same, draw a vertical line down the middle. On the top part write 100% and the bottom 10%. This is an energy meter. Take a moment to think of where your energy is right now. 100% being calm, balanced and ready to take on the world and 10% tired, burnt-out and anxious.

Let’s take a moment to reflect on our daily interactions with ourselves, our jobs, our family and friends as well as events that we have control over and those we don’t. By using the energy meter, do these interactions and activities move us down to the 10% energy or upwards to the 100%?

For example:

Sitting behind our desks without breaks, high-sugar and caffeine intake, working overtime and rushing to family and friend commitments. Frequently saying:”I just don’t have the energy for this right now.”

Think of our mental and emotional energy by endlessly browsing social media and comparing ourselves to others’ online personas.

Soul energy? What about not speaking our truth, the feeling of not being enough or not reaching our full potential?

Do these move your energy meter up or down?

Wouldn’t it be nice to have 100% energy to pursue our purpose with active, positive passion?

Topping up energy is like filling up a tank in a car. Passion similar to our intuition is our compass and our purpose is our destination. Passion is the gentle reminder that we need to stop and top-up!

Visualize with me for a moment. We are on our way to work.

Everything is going swimmingly, we can hear the birds in the trees, the brabble of the brooke and just then, poof- a flat tire. Amazing humans like we are we get out of the car and change the tire. This activity was energy intensive and also left us with grease on our hands and our clothing, we check the time, the compass forgotten as we start generating anxiety. Our overthinking thoughts take over, I’m going to be late for my important meeting, tick-tock tick-tock, I’m going to be so behind in my work, I have deadlines, the kids need to be at their sporting event this afternoon tick-tock tick-tock.

Our passion compass gently reminds us that the next pit-stop is just around the corner, the pitstop were we usually pull over to catch up with incoming messages and wash our hands. We have a decision to make, do we take a break and top-up our energy to 100% or do we skip this stop and head for work? Afterall, our energy meter is only down to 50% and time is our master.

We decide that we simply don’t have a minute to spare and push forward. Roadworks create an unexpected detour.  Stressed out because the commute took much longer than we have anticipated, we finally reach our workplace. By the time we turn on our laptop, our energy meter is at 20% when we start the day. Our efforts now need to make up for 80% to get us back to 100% energy to fuel our passion, to fulfil our purpose.

What if we topped-up right after the flat tire?

We get out of the vehicle, not overthinking that we should have checked the condition of the tires before we left, or sabotage our energy because we are going to be late. We simply change the tire.

We breathe, drop our shoulders, release the tension. Life happens. We thank the universe for sending us this message to slow down and take a moment to enjoy nature. We take our time and look at our phone’s GPS noticing the roadworks up ahead and plan an alternative route. At the pit-stop, we pull over, wash our hands and fill up our refillable water bottle. Our energy has now been topped-up to 80%.

We send an email explaining the flat tire and ask for the important meeting to be rescheduled. Topping up our energy by another 10%. At our desk, we turn on our laptop at 90% energy and we are able to work through our pile of work much more effectively and focused.

Throughout the day, we top-up our energy by doing the following:

Our bodies are nurtured with wholesome foods, zero-waste, herbal tea and taking short breaks for stretching. Reading and discussing an interesting article unrelated to work in the lunchroom, doing a puzzle or tinkering with a craft. Before the important meeting we take two minutes for a mindfulness meditation and an inspirational mantra. We set healthy boundaries on a private, personal and social level. At the end of our day we complete a section in our guided journal.

This energy meter is a tool for us all to become aware of what works for us and what doesn’t. What moves our energy meter to ten and what moves us to 100%.

I invite you to journal down 3 practical, doable and fun ways that can bring your energy back up:

Energy increase for my body

Energy increase for my mind

Energy increase for my soul/spirit

Share this energy meter with your family and friends as they explore their own energy, passions and purpose. Stick this meter somewhere visible in your office as a reminder to check your energy level throughout the day. Involve your co-workers in this strategy and become in-tune with the collective energies at work. We are all remarkable humans with so much potential, uniqueness and creativity.

Sending you love, light and positive energy to pursue your purpose with 100% passion.
